How to create statistical characters and symbols in Word:
bullet equation_editor: Shows how to use the Equation Editor for <= Word 2003.  Some symbols and characters that can be created with the Equation Editor include:

bullet install_equation_editor.doc - Unfortunately, Equation Editor is not installed by default when installing Office XP.  This file shows how to install it (after Office had already been installed) using Windows XP and Office XP Professional.  There is also a note in the file about being unable to access the equation editor in Word 2007 at times.
bullet inserting_symbols: Shows how some characters, such as: Greek letters,  ≤, and ≥, can be inserted into a document by using Word’s "Insert Symbol" option instead of using the Equation Editor.
bullet subscripts_and_superscripts: Shows how to insert subscripts and superscripts.  
bulletEquations_examples.doc: Examples of what is and is not acceptable for items turned in that involve equations.
