Biometry
Biometry encompasses a wide variety of applications of statistics to the biological sciences. This includes the design and analysis of biological experiments and surveys, the quantification of biological phenomena, the use of statistical principles in managing biological processes, etc. Biometry originated from statistical applications for agriculture, but its scope now includes such diverse areas as genetics, environmental sciences, food and water quality assurance, pharmaceutical development and risk assessment, international development, and many more. Exciting new areas are opening up, thanks to developments in such areas as biotechnology and computing.
A number of faculty in the Department of Statistics are involved in various types of biometrical research. Students may choose to emphasize Biometry in either the MS or PhD programs. At the PhD level, Statistics faculty can direct PhDs in Statistics with an emphasis in Biometry or PhDs in Biometry granted through other departments such as Agronomy. For more information, contact the graduate chairperson in Statistics.
Students who have majored in mathematics or statistics and have an interest in applications of these disciplines to biology, OR students who have majored in a biological science and who have a good mathematics background; we invite you to consider a career in biometry.
