Sports Statistics

Sports statistics in the Department of Statistics is much more than batting averages. As a major focus area, we try to find innovative ways to improve the performance of athletic teams as well as individual athletes. Faculty and their graduate students in the department have worked with coaches from the University as well as local high schools (see Omaha World Herald Article). Past or continuing projects have involved analyses pertaining to baseball, basketball, football, NASCAR, soccer, volleyball, and weight training. There are numerous opportunities to become involved with statistics in sports at the University of Nebraska, where our goal is to train statisticians so that they can, in turn, be creative in assisting improved execution of athletes and teams.
