Assistantship Requirements
The Department of Statistics has a limited number of teaching and research assistantships available on a competitive basis. These are granted for one year, with renewal for an additional year pending satisfactory performance during the first year.
The teaching assistants duties include teaching labs, introductory courses, grading, and other tasks relevant to the teaching mission of the department. The research assistant task include statistical consulting, data processing, programming, and other tasks relevant to the consulting mission of the department. A normal assistantship is a half-time position (20 hours/week).
In addition to the requirements for admission, applicants for assistantships must complete the Graduate Assistantship form. International students applying for assistantships would normally be expected to have a TOEFL score of at least 600, a TSE score of at least 220, take intensive English courses provided by the University's International Programs Office, and provide additional evidence of adequate communications skills for teaching/consulting (e.g. through letters of reference).
For full consideration, the application for a graduate assistantship should be completed by March 1 for the Fall semester and by October 15 for the Spring semester.
