Graduate Program Admission Requirements
All applicants must apply for admission to the graduate college as well as to the department. We encourage all new applicants to apply to the PhD program, even if they intend to only obtain a MS, because more financial support opportunities are available to PhD students. Please see the current University of Nebraska Graduate Studies Admissions Guide for details about admission procedures for the Graduate College; Graduate Studies Admission Form. In addition, the Department of Statistics has the following requirements:
- Cumulative GPA of 2.50 or better.
- Three letters of recommendation.
- Letter of intent.
- Graduate Record General Exam (GRE General) - Recommended but not required
Students beginning graduate studies in Statistics are expected to have
- At least one course in statistics
- 3 semesters of calculus
- 1 semester of matrix algebra
- Have a 3.00 GPA or better in the above courses
Students who have not taken these courses can be accepted into the program on a provisional basis. Provisional status will be removed when the deficiencies are made up. Please note that it is common for a student entering the MS program to have only a few (or even just one) statistics course since most universities do not have statistics undergraduate programs. For international applicants, we require.
- International Applicants: Minimum TOEFL score of 550
- TSE Score
All application materials are due at the department two months prior to the beginning of the semester the student's program begins (e.g. 6/15 for students beginning Fall semester, 10/31 for students beginning Spring semester). Note that application materials must be received by the Graduate College ONE MONTH PRIOR to departmental deadlines (e.g. 5/15 for Fall semester, 9/30 for Spring semester).
